Backyard chickens are productive, social flock birds that provide fresh eggs and natural garden pest control. Providing well-ventilated coops, predator-proof runs, and life-stage nutrition ensures a healthy laying flock.

1. Coop Dimensions & Draft-Free Ventilation

• Coop Space: Provide a minimum of 3 to 4 sq ft of indoor coop floor space per bird, plus 8 to 10 sq ft in the outdoor run.
• Ventilation: Chicken droppings produce high moisture and ammonia. Coops require continuous high-level ventilation (minimum 1 sq ft per bird near the roofline) that allows warm moist air to escape without blowing drafts directly onto roosting perches.
• Roosting & Nest Boxes: Provide 8–10 inches of wooden roosting bar per hen and 1 nesting box per 3–4 hens.

2. Life-Stage Nutrition, Calcium, & Insoluble Grit

• Chicks (0–8 wks): Starter crumbles with 18–20% protein.
• Laying Hens (18+ wks): 16% layer feed supplemented with free-choice crushed oyster shell (calcium) in a separate feeder for strong eggshells.
• Insoluble Granite Grit: Essential in the gizzard to grind whole grains and forage.

3. Predator-Proofing & Biosecurity

Hardware cloth (½ inch welded wire) must cover all windows, vents, and buried perimeter aprons. Never rely on traditional chicken wire, which raccoons and foxes can easily tear open.
