Guinea pigs (cavies) are vocal, gentle herd rodents native to the Andean regions of South America. They have distinct dietary requirements, delicate foot anatomy, and deep social bonding needs.

1. Mandatory Dietary Vitamin C

Like humans, guinea pigs lack the L-gulonolactone oxidase enzyme and cannot synthesize Vitamin C. Deficiency results in rapid scurvy, joint pain, loose teeth, and internal hemorrhaging. Provide:

• Daily Vitamin C: 10–30 mg daily via fresh bell peppers (yellow and red), stabilized cavy pellets, or specialized chewable supplements.
• Unlimited Grass Hay: Timothy or orchard grass hay makes up 80%+ of their daily intake.

2. Enclosure Sizing & Flat Flooring

Cavies lack climbing agility and need wide, flat running space. A bonded pair requires a minimum of 7.5 to 10.5 sq ft of flat floor area (such as a 2×4 C&C grid cage). Never use wire grid flooring, which causes crippling foot infections (bumblefoot).

3. Companionship

Guinea pigs are herd animals that suffer severe depression and loneliness when housed alone. In Switzerland, it is illegal to keep a solitary guinea pig. Always adopt cavies in bonded pairs or small groups.
