Modern Hamster Husbandry & Burrowing Enrichment

Hamsters are solitary, nocturnal rodents that require significantly more space and deep burrowing substrate than traditional pet store cages provide. In the wild, hamsters travel several miles each night foraging across vast home ranges.

1. Minimum Floor Space & Deep Bedding

Ethical welfare standards require a minimum unbroken floor area of 600–800+ sq inches (approx 40 × 20 in / 100 × 50 cm). Wire cages with shallow bases prevent natural burrowing. Provide at least 6 to 10 inches of compressed paper-based bedding so your hamster can dig complex underground tunnel systems. Never use cedar or pine shavings containing toxic aromatic phenols.

2. Upright Wheel Sizing & Spine Protection

Hamsters run up to 5 miles per night. An undersized wheel forces the hamster to arch its spine backward, causing chronic spinal damage.

• Syrian Hamsters: Require a minimum 11 to 12-inch diameter wheel.
• Dwarf & Roborovski Hamsters: Require an 8 to 10-inch diameter wheel.
• Always choose a solid-surface running track (never wire mesh or rungs that cause foot entrapment).

3. Sand Baths & Nutrition

Hamsters must never be bathed in water. Provide a ceramic dish filled with calcium-free reptile desert sand or heat-sterilized children's play sand for daily coat grooming.
