Sheep are gentle, flocking grazing ruminants that excel at converting grass pasture into wool, milk, and meat. Successful sheep husbandry requires strict attention to copper toxicity risks, rotational grazing, and annual shearing.

1. Grazing Nutrition & Copper Toxicity Warning

Sheep have an extremely sensitive metabolic pathway for copper storage in the liver.

• Copper Toxicity Danger: Sheep absorb and store copper easily. Standard livestock or goat feeds containing added copper are lethal to sheep, causing acute hemolytic crisis. Always feed copper-free ovine specific mineral mixes.
• Pasture Management: Rotate pastures every 3–7 days to break internal parasite life cycles and maintain leafy forage stand height.

2. Shearing & Parasite Control

• Annual Shearing: Wool breeds must be shorn at least once per year (typically in spring before lambing) to prevent heat stress, flystrike (maggot infestation), and wool blindness.
• FAMACHA & Foot Rot: Monitor flock anemia with FAMACHA scoring and maintain dry footing to prevent Dichelobacter nodosus foot rot.
