Benefits
Coconut contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that some pets tolerate well, plus manganese and fiber.
Risks
High fat can trigger pancreatitis in dogs and upset stomachs in small mammals. Sweetened, dried coconut has added sugar. Coconut water contains potassium — too much can affect heart rhythm.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or lethargy suggests pancreatitis — see your vet.
Vet advice
A small pinch of unsweetened flakes or a teaspoon of coconut oil weekly is plenty. Skip for pancreatitis-prone breeds.
