A "Catio" (cat patio) is a fully enclosed, predator-proof outdoor enclosure that bridges the gap between indoor safety and outdoor sensory stimulation. While free-roaming outdoor cats face catastrophic mortality risks (vehicular trauma, coyotes, rodenticide poisoning, retroviruses), strict indoor confinement can lead to boredom and obesity.

- Window Box Catio: Minimum 3 to 4 ft Wide × 18 to 24 inches Deep (Single cat sunbathing)
- Small Porch / Balcony Catio: 24 to 36 sq ft (1 to 2 cats with multi-tier shelving)
- Walk-In Garden Catio: 48 to 100+ sq ft (Multi-cat households; human seating included)
Vertical Usable Space Multiplier: Install vertical climbing ramps and perches up to 6–8 feet high

Catio Structural Biosecurity Protocols

1. Predator-Proof Wire Mesh: Never use standard vinyl window screening (cats easily tear through it and raccoons shred it). Use 16-gauge galvanized welded wire mesh with 1/2-inch or 1-inch openings.
2. Escape-Proof Roof & Floor: Catios must have solid corrugated poly-carbonate or wire-mesh roofs to block climbing predators (raccoons, birds of prey).
3. Non-Toxic Feline Flora: Plant pet-safe cat grass (wheatgrass), catnip, cat thyme, and spider plants; NEVER plant lilies, azaleas, or foxglove nearby.
