Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
Assess the risk if your dog ate chocolate — based on chocolate type, amount, and your dog's weight.
Theobromine dose: 6.6 mg/kg

How it works
Canine Methylxanthine Toxicology, Toxicokinetics, and Emergency Decontamination
Chocolate ingestion is the single most common holiday toxicology emergency in companion canine medicine. The primary toxic principles in chocolate are Methylxanthine alkaloids—specifically Theobromine (3,7-dimethylxanthine) and Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine).
While humans rapidly metabolize methylxanthines, canines metabolize theobromine extremely slowly (half-life of 17.5 hours in dogs vs. 2–3 hours in humans), allowing the compounds to accumulate in the bloodstream and cross the blood-brain barrier.
Under emergency toxicology protocols established by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and the Merck Veterinary Manual:
Theobromine Clinical Toxicity Thresholds: - Mild Toxicity (20 mg/kg): Polydipsia, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, abdominal bloating - Moderate / Cardiotoxic (40–50 mg/kg): Tachycardia (heart rate > 180 bpm), premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), hypertension - Severe / Neurotoxic (60 mg/kg+): Muscle tremors, hyperthermia, seizures, cardiac arrest, coma, death Methylxanthine Concentration by Chocolate Type: - Cocoa Powder (Dry): 700 to 800 mg Theobromine per ounce (EXTREMELY LETHAL) - Unsweetened Baker's Chocolate: 400 to 450 mg per ounce (HIGHLY LETHAL) - Semi-Sweet / Dark Chocolate: 150 to 200 mg per ounce - Milk Chocolate: 45 to 60 mg per ounce (Moderate risk in large quantities) - White Chocolate: 0.25 mg per ounce (Negligible theobromine, but high pancreatitis fat risk)
Clinical Emergency Decontamination Protocols
If a toxic dose of chocolate was ingested within the past 2 to 4 hours:
- Veterinary Emesis Induction: Administer IV Apomorphine to induce rapid, complete gastric emptying.
- Activated Charcoal Adsorption: Administer repeated doses of Activated Charcoal with Sorbitol every 4 to 6 hours to bind methylxanthines and prevent enterohepatic recirculation.
- Continuous ECG & IV Fluid Diuresis: IV fluid diuresis accelerates urinary excretion while monitoring cardiac arrhythmias.
