Newborn Care Timeline
The first 12 weeks of a puppy or kitten's life have more milestones than any other period. Colostrum in the first 2 hours, eyes opening around day 10-14, first solid food at 3-4 weeks, first vaccines at 6-8 weeks, socialization windows that close forever if missed. This timeline lays out every stage from day 0 to rehoming, with the tasks a breeder or foster caregiver needs to complete at each step. Follow it closely — the difference between a well-adjusted puppy or kitten and a problem adult is set in these weeks.
Day 0-2 — Colostrum window
- Confirm all newborns nurse within 2 hours
- Weigh at birth, then every 12h for 3 days
- Room temp 85-90°F for puppies, 88°F for kittens
- Watch for fading — cold, limp, or crying constantly = emergency vet
Day 3-7 — Adjustment week
- Weight should increase 5-10% daily
- Cord stumps fall off around day 3
- Reduce ambient temp gradually to 80°F
- Deworm mom (safe wormer only) — nematodes pass through milk
Week 2 — Eyes and ears open
- Eyes open days 10-14 (never force)
- Ears open days 14-17
- Introduce firm bedding for footing
- Ambient temp 75°F now safe
Week 3 — First movements
- Puppies/kittens start walking wobbly
- Introduce a shallow litter tray (kittens) or paper (puppies)
- First deworming for babies
- Begin gentle handling — 30 sec per pup, 3-4x daily
Week 4-5 — Weaning begins

- Playtime with littermates — critical socialization
- Nails trimmed weekly (mom's teats get scratched)
- First vet check-up
Week 6-8 — Independence
- Full weaning complete
- First vaccines (typically 6-8 weeks)
- Socialization with humans — new sounds, gentle handling
- Deworming boosters
Week 8-12 — Ready to rehome
- Puppies: 8 weeks US minimum, 10-12 ideal
- Kittens: 10-12 weeks minimum
- Second vaccines
- Provide new owners with weight/vaccine/deworming records
Emergency signs: constant crying, cold to touch, no weight gain by day 2, refusing to nurse, blue/pale gums. Call an emergency vet immediately — neonates crash within hours.
