How it works

Canine paw pads are specialized anatomical structures consisting of thick cornified stratified squamous keratin epithelium, subcutaneous adipose shock-absorbing tissue, and eccrine sweat glands. While paw pads protect against rugged natural terrain, they are highly vulnerable to thermal contact burns on sun-heated asphalt and chemical burns from caustic winter de-icing salts.
Under veterinary emergency burn protocols from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Merck Veterinary Manual:

If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws!
Clinical Triage for Thermal Pad Burns
If paw pads have been burned on hot pavement:
- Immediate Cold Water Lavage: Flush pads with cool (not ice-cold) water for 10 to 15 minutes to halt thermal tissue destruction.
- Do Not Apply Butter or Heavy Ointments: Heavy greases trap heat inside deeper dermal tissue layers.
- Seek Veterinary Care: Severe thermal burns cause the keratinized pad to blister, ulcerate, and slough off, requiring systemic pain management, sterile non-stick dressings (Vetrap), and systemic antibiotics to prevent sepsis.
