Water is the most essential nutrient in companion animal biology. The mammalian body consists of 60% to 70% water, which functions as the universal solvent for cellular biochemical reactions, thermoregulation through panting/sweating, vascular perfusion, and the filtration of metabolic waste products through the renal glomeruli.
According to veterinary fluid therapy standards established by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) and the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS), chronic subclinical dehydration is a primary driver of feline chronic kidney disease (CKD), feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD / FIC), and canine urolithiasis (bladder stones).

The Feline Evolutionary Thirst Paradox
Domestic cats descended from the African wildcat (Felis lybica), an arid desert-dwelling carnivore. Consequently, cats have an evolutionarily low intrinsic thirst drive:
- In the wild, cats derive over 70% of their daily hydration directly from the blood and tissue of whole prey.
- When fed exclusively dry kibble (10% moisture), cats do not voluntarily drink enough standing water to compensate, maintaining chronically concentrated urine (specific gravity > 1.050).
- This concentrated urine triggers the precipitation of struvite and calcium oxalate bladder crystals, leading to life-threatening urethral blockages in male cats and accelerating renal failure.
- The Solution: Feed high-moisture canned wet food and provide circulating stainless steel water fountains.
Clinical Dehydration Assessment Triage
- Skin Turgor (Skin Pinch Test): Pinch a fold of skin over the shoulders and release. In a hydrated pet, it snaps back instantly. If the skin tent remains for 2 to 4+ seconds, the pet is 5% to 8%+ dehydrated.
- Mucous Membranes: Gums should feel wet, slippery, and pink. Dry, tacky, or sticky gums indicate acute dehydration.
