When a companion animal exhibits acute clinical signs of illness, timely veterinary triage is crucial. 6. Pale White Gums + Lethargy: Acute internal hemorrhaging (splenic rupture / hemangiosarcoma)

Evaluating Objective Vital Parameters at Home

• Gum Color (Mucous Membranes): Normal is healthy bubblegum pink. White indicates shock or internal bleeding; brick red indicates sepsis/heatstroke; yellow/jaundiced indicates liver failure or red blood cell lysis; blue/purple indicates acute hypoxia (lack of oxygen).
• Capillary Refill Time (CRT): Press thumb to gums for 2 seconds. Pink color must return in < 2.0 seconds.
• Respiratory Rate at Rest: Normal resting/sleeping rate is 15 to 30 breaths per minute (one rise and fall = 1 breath). Consistent resting rates > 35–40 breaths/min indicate congestive heart failure (pulmonary edema) or pneumonia.
