How it works
Veterinary Immunology, Maternal Antibody Interference, and Core vs Non-Core Protocols
Vaccination is the most successful preventative medicine intervention in veterinary history, protecting companion animals against highly contagious and lethal viral and bacterial pathogens. Under standardized guidelines established by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Canine Vaccine Task Force and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), vaccines are classified into Core (mandatory for all animals) and Non-Core (lifestyle and geographically dependent).
Canine Core Vaccine Protocols (AAHA Standards): - Rabies: Administered at 12–16 weeks, boosted at 1 year, then every 3 years by law - DAPP / DHPP (Distemper, Adenovirus-2/Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza): Initial series every 3–4 weeks from 6–8 weeks until 16–20 weeks; boosted at 1 yr, then every 3 years Feline Core Vaccine Protocols (AAFP Standards): - Rabies: Required by law; 1-year or 3-year non-adjuvanted recombinant formulations - FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia): Series every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks; boosted at 1 yr, then every 3 years
Maternal Antibody Interference (The Window of Vulnerability)
Newborn puppies and kittens absorb protective maternal antibodies (immunoglobulins / IgG) from their mother's colostrum during the first 24 hours of life.
- These maternal antibodies circulate for 6 to 16 weeks, naturally neutralizing viruses.
- However, maternal antibodies also neutralize vaccine antigens before the puppy's own immune system can respond.
- Because the exact week maternal antibodies decline varies in every puppy, vaccines must be administered in a series every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 to 20 weeks of age to guarantee successful active immunization.
Non-Core Lifestyle Vaccines
- Canine Leptospirosis: Mandatory for dogs near wildlife, puddles, and rural/suburban areas (protects against zoonotic Leptospira bacterial kidney/liver failure).
- Bordetella & Canine Influenza (H3N2/H3N8): Required for dogs entering boarding, daycare, grooming salons, and dog parks.
- Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): Essential for all outdoor cats and kittens.
