Puppy Socialization Checklist

Developmental Behavioral Neurobiology, Epigenetics, and the 3–14 Week Window

The primary critical socialization window in domestic dogs occurs between 3 and 14 weeks of age (and 2 to 7 weeks in kittens). During this neurodevelopmental phase, the mammalian brain forms billions of synaptic connections and lacks the full fearful neophobic response that develops after 16 weeks.

According to position statements published by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB):

The Critical Socialization Standard (AVSAB Position Statement):
- Behavioral issues (fear, aggression, reactivity) are the #1 cause of death/relinquishment in young dogs
- Safe, controlled socialization must begin BEFORE the full vaccination series is complete (around 8 weeks)
- The Rule of 100: Expose puppies to 100 positive novel stimuli (surfaces, sounds, humans, gear) by 16 weeks

Positive Exposure vs. Overwhelming Flooding

Socialization is NOT simply exposing a puppy to as many dogs or strangers as possible. Socialization is creating positive, calm conditioned emotional responses (CER+):

• If a puppy appears nervous (tucking tail, backing away, lip licking), DO NOT FORCE THEM TO INTERACT (flooding). Flooding creates permanent traumatic phobias.
• Increase distance from the trigger, feed high-value treats, and allow the puppy to investigate at their own chosen pace.
