Nutritional Biochemistry and Approved Staple Diets for Sugar Gliders

Sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) are small arboreal marsupials native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. In the wild, their seasonal diet revolves around eucalyptus sap, acacia gum, nectar, honeydew, pollen, and diverse insects.

Sugar gliders have complex nutritional biochemistry. Feeding an unverified, generic captive diet (such as raw fruit and seed mixes) causes severe metabolic bone disease, cataracts, liver failure, and early death. Gliders must be fed an approved, scientifically verified captive staple diet.

The Critical Calcium-to-Phosphorus (Ca:P) Ratio & HLP

The single greatest veterinary risk in sugar glider husbandry is Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, clinically known as Hind-Leg Paralysis (HLP) or Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

When a glider is fed high-phosphorus foods without adequate bioavailable calcium, the parathyroid glands pull calcium out of the skeletal bones to maintain blood serum levels. This causes bone demineralization, curvature of the spine, tremors, and sudden, agonizing paralysis of the hind limbs. Maintaining a strict 2:1 Calcium to Phosphorus ratio in every meal is essential to prevent this irreversible condition.

Overview of Approved Captive Staple Diets

  1. HPW (High Protein Wombaroo): Based on Australian Wombaroo High Protein Supplement, pure raw honey, bee pollen, water, and hard-boiled eggs. Highly palatable, balanced, and mirrors natural eucalyptus nectar and pollen.
  2. BML (Bourbon's Modified Leadbeater's): A strict, blenderized recipe of Gerber baby cereal, honey, hard-boiled eggs, Rep-Cal calcium (with Vitamin D3), Herptivite vitamins, and apple juice. Must be followed with exact approved fruits/veggies without substitutions.
  3. TPG (The Pet Glider Diet): Features a cooked protein base (chicken/turkey), applesauce, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, and fresh produce, topped daily with proprietary TPG Vitamin & Calcium Supplement.

Nightly Feeding Routine

Sugar gliders are strictly nocturnal marsupials. Serve their fresh staple mix, chopped fruits/vegetables, and gut-loaded insects at dusk when they wake up. Always remove any uneaten perishable wet food in the morning to prevent bacterial proliferation and fruit fly infestations.
