While mechanical and biological filters trap solids and convert toxic ammonia into nitrate, they do not remove accumulated end-products, organic acids, dissolved hormones, or heavy metals from closed aquatic systems.

1. Why Water Changes Are Chemically Mandatory

Over time, closed aquariums undergo continuous chemical evolution:

3. Water Change Best Practices

  1. Temperature Matching: Always adjust replacement tap water to within 1°C / 2°F of the tank water to prevent thermal shock and suppress Ich outbreaks.
  2. Dechlorination: Tap water contains toxic chlorine and chloramines that destroy fish gill filaments and sterilize biofilter media. Dose a broad-spectrum conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramines, and binds heavy metals.
  3. Substrate Siphoning: Use a gravel siphon to remove detritus from open substrate zones, alternating quadrants each session to preserve beneficial microfauna.
