Domestic waterfowl—including ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and geese (Anser anser)—possess a unique metabolic profile that diverges significantly from land gallinaceous poultry (chickens and turkeys). Ducks experience extraordinary early post-hatch growth rates, often increasing their hatching weight by over 300% to 400% within their first 3 weeks of life.

Formulating a scientifically complete waterfowl diet requires addressing critical Niacin (Vitamin B3) coenzyme requirements, calcium balance, and specialized bill anatomy codified by the Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory and the National Research Council (NRC).

Waterfowl Nutritional Benchmarks by Life Stage:
- Ducklings (0–3 Weeks): 20% to 22% Crude Protein (Crumbled Pellets, 65–70 mg/kg Niacin)
- Growing Ducks (4–18 Weeks): 15% to 16% Crude Protein (Pellet Form, 55 mg/kg Niacin)

THE CRITICAL DEFICIENCY: Niacin (Vitamin B3) and Crippled Legs

The most common and devastating nutritional pathology in backyard ducklings is Niacin Deficiency Rickets / Perosis:

  • Standard commercial chick starter feed is formulated for chickens, containing only 30 to 35 mg/kg of Niacin.
  • Ducks have inefficient cellular conversion of the amino acid tryptophan to niacin and have a minimum biological requirement of 55 to 70 mg/kg of Niacin.
  • Feeding unsupplemented chick starter to ducklings causes severe bowing of the leg bones, enlarged hock joints, slipped Achilles tendons, and permanent inability to walk by week 3 to 4.
  • The Mandate: If using standard chick starter, add 1 tablespoon of pure Brewer's Yeast or Nutritional Yeast per 1 cup of feed, or use specialized non-medicated Waterfowl Starter pellets.

Ingestion Hydrodynamics: The Deep Water Bowl Mandate

Ducks possess flat bills with sensitive serrated edges (lamellae) designed for straining food from water.

  • Never feed dry powdery mash to ducks. Fine mash sticks to the inside of their bills, packing tightly into the roof of the mouth and causing asphyxiation / choking.
  • Always feed in extruded pellet form.
  • The Golden Feeding Rule: Ducks must ALWAYS have deep water bowls (at least 3 to 5 inches deep) placed immediately next to their feed dish. Ducks take a mouthful of dry pellets, immediately dunk their bills into the water, and swish vigorously to moisten the feed and flush their nostrils (nares). Denying water while feeding causes immediate choke.
