Domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) and geese are semi-aquatic waterfowl whose evolutionary anatomy is hardwired for water. While ducks can technically survive on dry land with simple drinking waterers, open swimming water is biologically indispensable for ocular lubrication, nostril flushing, preen oil activation, and leg joint health.

The Biological Necessity of Water Submergence
- Nares & Eye Flushing: Ducks lack tear ducts like mammals. They must completely submerge their entire heads into clean water multiple times daily to flush dirt and debris from their nostrils (nares) and lubricate their eyes, preventing bacterial conjunctivitis and sinusitis.
- Uropygial Gland Oil Distribution: Swimming stimulates the uropygial gland at the base of the tail to express waterproofing oils, which the duck combs across its plumage to maintain buoyant, thermal insulation.
- Leg Joint Cushioning: Heavy domestic breeds (Pekins, Rouens, Muscovies) carry significant breast weight. Swimming provides buoyancy that relieves chronic pressure on their hocks and footpads, completely eliminating bumblefoot (pododermatitis).
The 2 Successful Duck Water Systems
- The Drain-and-Refill Low-Tech System (Best for 2–8 Ducks):
- Use heavy-duty, UV-stabilized polyethylene livestock stock tanks (100–300 gallons) or sturdy kiddie pools.
- Install a 2-inch PVC ball valve or knife drain at the very bottom.
