Weaning Schedule (Puppies, Kittens, Rabbits)
Weaning is a gradual process, not a switch. Puppies and kittens should be introduced to solid food around week 3-4, transitioned over 3-5 weeks, and fully weaned by week 7-8 — but they should stay with mom and littermates for social development until at least 8-10 weeks (puppies) or 10-12 weeks (kittens). Rabbit kits follow a different rhythm: alfalfa-based diet only, greens delayed until well after weaning. This tool builds a species-specific week-by-week plan from the litter's birth date.
Introduce puppy gruel: soaked kibble + puppy milk replacer, 4x daily. Nursing still primary.
Thicker gruel, less milk replacer. Puppies eating solids ~30% of intake.
Soaked kibble only (no milk replacer). Nursing 2-3x daily.
Dry kibble + water on side. Nursing reduced to 1-2x daily.
Fully on solid puppy food. Separate mom for longer periods.
Weaning complete. Ready to leave litter (US minimum; 10 weeks better).
How it works
Feline and Canine Weaning Physiology, Digestive Enzymes, and Diet Transition
Weaning is the complex physiological transition from maternal liquid colostrum/milk to solid, nutrient-dense growth formulations. During weeks 3 to 4 of life, neonatal lactase enzyme production begins to decline in the small intestine, while pancreatic amylase, lipase, and protease enzymes surge to digest complex carbohydrates, meat proteins, and dietary fats.
Under pediatric veterinary standards from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the WSAVA:
The 4-Week Weaning Step-Down Protocol: - Week 3 to 4 (The Gruel Phase): Introduce shallow dish of warm milk replacer (Esbilac/KMR) mixed with growth kibble blended into a smooth soup - Week 5 (Thick Oatmeal Phase): Reduce liquid replacer; mash canned growth food with warm water into oatmeal consistency - Week 6 (Soft Kibble Phase): Offer moistened solid puppy/kitten kibble with minimal liquid - Week 7 to 8 (Full Independence): 100% dry or canned solid growth diet; fully weaned from maternal nursing
Protecting Maternal Mammary Health (Mastitis Prevention)
Abruptly separating a nursing mother from her litter causes severe milk engorgement, leading to excruciatingly painful and potentially fatal bacterial Mastitis.
- Weaning must be gradual: separate mother for 2 to 3 hours during day 1 of week 4, gradually expanding separation hours so her milk supply naturally dries up (involution).
