Axolotl Tank Size Calculator

Calculate the minimum tank volume, floor footprint and hide count for one or more axolotls, plus flow advice for your filter type.

Ideal — gentle flow

  • Floor area beats water column — axolotls are benthic and rarely use vertical space.
  • Use fine sand or bare bottom. Gravel causes fatal impaction.
  • Axolotls are solitary and thrive alone.

How it works

Comprehensive Guide: Axolotl Enclosure Sizing, Substrate Safety & Flow Dynamics

Providing appropriate housing for the Mexican Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) requires understanding their unique adult size, benthic lifestyle, and sensitive physiology. Fully grown adult axolotls reach 9 to 12 inches (23 to 30 cm) in length and produce substantial biological waste, necessitating adequate water volume, expansive floor area, and low-flow filtration.

1. Footprint Over Volume: Why "Long" Tanks Are Mandatory

Axolotls are almost exclusively bottom-dwelling (benthic) organisms that walk along the substrate floor rather than swimming in open water columns:

  • Standard 20-Gallon Long ($30" \times 12" \times 12"$): Provides 360 square inches of floor footprint, making it the universal minimum housing standard for a single adult axolotl.
  • Standard 20-Gallon High ($24" \times 12" \times 16"$): Provides only 288 square inches of floor area. The extra vertical depth is wasted on an axolotl and makes cooling and cleaning harder.
  • Multiple Axolotls: For every additional adult axolotl, add a minimum of 10 to 15 gallons of volume and at least 120 square inches of floor space (e.g., a 40-gallon Breeder tank with a $36" \times 18"$ footprint comfortably houses 2 to 3 same-sized adults).

2. The Fatal Impaction Hazard: Substrate Selection Rules

Axolotls hunt using powerful vacuum suction, inhaling food, water, and anything nearby:

  • Gravel, Pebbles, & Small Stones: NEVER USE. Swallowed gravel causes severe, often fatal gastrointestinal impaction requiring invasive surgery or resulting in death.
  • Fine Silica Sand (<1 mm grain size): Safe only for sub-adult and adult axolotls larger than 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm). Any ingested micro-sand passes harmlessly through the digestive tract.
  • Bare-Bottom Glass / Slate Tile: The safest, cleanest option for juveniles under 5 inches and hospital enclosures.

3. Low-Flow Filtration Engineering

Axolotls have delicate, highly vascularized external gill stalks with feathery fimbriae. High water current causes chronic physical stress, gill damage, and appetite loss:

  • Dual Sponge Filters: The gold standard for axolotls. Provides massive biological filtration with gentle, zero-current aeration.
  • Canister & HOB Filters: Must be equipped with spray bars directed against the glass or flow baffles to diffuse water velocity.
