Decoding Fecal Color Diagnostics

• Chocolate Brown (Normal): Healthy breakdown of bile pigments (stercobilin).
• Frank Red Blood (Hematochezia): Fresh bleeding from the lower colon, rectum, or anal glands (caused by colitis, hookworms, or parvovirus).
• Black, Tarry Stool (Melena): Digested blood from the stomach or upper small intestine (caused by bleeding ulcers, foreign bodies, or rodenticide ingestion).
• Clay / White / Chalky: Lack of bile secretion (biliary tract obstruction or liver disease) or excessive raw bone ingestion.
• Yellow / Orange: Rapid transit time through small intestine or hepatic/pancreatic insufficiency.
